Apartments to Rent in Durham
Voted the ‘best city in the UK’ by Conde Nast Traveller magazine, Durham is one of the finest cultural and historical destinations in the UK. A quintessential old English University City, it has a wonderful timeless quality with rowing on the Wear and relaxing riverside walks, yet buzzes with a vibrant contemporary culture with superb cafes, artisan workshops, boutiques, galleries and museums and many very desirable apartments to rent in Durham.
Shopping
Stylish boutiques and quirky craft shops jostle for attention alongside high street brands, while Durham Indoor Market still retains its Victorian charm. Durham has two shopping centres, Prince Bishop’s and The Gates that play home to popular high street brands. For a unique shopping experience, however, visit The Mugwump and you’ll find a wide selection of designer clothing shops or browse the beautiful Oxfam boutique store, the only one outside of London on Durham’s Elvet Bridge. Durham Indoor Market also boasts around 60 stalls selling a wide selection of fine goods. In addition the weekly Saturday Outdoor Retail Market in the city centre offers around 30 stalls selling a unique range of retail clothing and goods.
Heritage and culture
Dating back to 1093 Durham Cathedral, at the heart of the city, is a centre of Christianity and is one of the world’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture. Sitting across from the Cathedral is the Castle World Heritage Site, a grand Norman fortress, now part of the Durham College complex, not to be missed.
There is a wealth of culture to be enjoyed in the city centre. The Durham Light Infantry Museum has been described as one of the best military museums in Britain and The Durham Oriental Museum is home to an outstanding collection of prehistoric and ancient art from China, Korea, Japan and Egypt. Quirky Victorian antiquities feature at the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology in Durham on the banks of the River Wear.
