Learn to Sail Like a Pro – Ten Things You Need to Pack for Worry-Free Sailboat Cruising

If you want to learn to sail like a pro, you need to know the most essential pieces of sailing gear to pack in your personal ditty bag. These essentials become even more vital when you go sailboat cruising offshore. Use this simple check-sheet to make sure you have what you need for a worry-free sailing adventure.

From my experience after crewing thousands of offshore sailing miles aboard small sailboats, space and weight are the main factors to consider when you pack. Limit your baggage to two soft-sided, soft-bottom duffel bags (or a duffel bag and a backpack). Use bags without wheels or rigid sides and bottom.

As you read over this list, realize that these are just the absolute essentials to have with you wherever you cruise. Throw these in your pack before any other single item. That way, you know you will be covered wherever in the world you choose to cruise.

1. Sailing Knife and Marlinspike

Carry a knife and marlinspike on your belt at all times (not in your pocket, and not down below in your bag). You need it ready to use in an instant. A knife will cut through sailing rope or free a Genoa sheet wrapped around your leg. The marlinspike helps pry open strands of rope for splicing. Folding knives with a 3″ blade and marlinspike are fine, but require two hands to open and close. A better choice would be a straight blade, rigging knife with a 3″ blade and a separate marlinspike in a sheath.

Always, always secure a knife with a lanyard to your belt. This keeps it attached to you even if it slips out of your hands. This can be critical if you have to go aloft or slip over the side with a rope wrapped around your leg (this has happened more than once to sailing crews offshore!)

Northwest New Jersey Agritourism, Ecotourism and Cultural Heritage

Many of you may have never heard of the Highlands before. It is that beautiful, breathtaking part of New Jersey that lies about an hour from Philadelphia and about 40 minutes from New York City. It stretches from Phillipsburg New Jersey on the Delaware River to beautiful Mahwah, Bergen County. You may have even driven through it on you way to Philadelphia or New York City or New York State. I guess it shouldn’t surprise those that live in this rural, historic and pristine part of New Jersey – it seems like everything else passes through!

Mother Nature Passes Through – passing through with the Appalachian Trail, the Highlands and the Atlantic Flyway. Our location on the Atlantic flyway makes the Highlands one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the State of New Jersey. In general New Jersey boasts the highest density of wildlife per square mile of any state in the nation. New Jersey, the fourth smallest state, hosts over 325 birds species, 90 mammal species, 79 reptile and amphibian species and over 400 species of fish in its 8,722 square miles. The Appalachian Trail goes through 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. In New Jersey 74 miles of the trail passes through – from the Delaware Water Gap, passing Sunfish Pond, following the Kittatinny Ridge and then passing through High Point and Wawayanda State Parks. Part of the Appalachian Trail is the Highlands Region – 88 municipalities and nearly 860,000 acres of forested ridges, rolling farmlands, diverse recreation, abundant wildlife and historic treasures.

History Passes Through – From the soldiers that fought in the revolution to the transportation methods that fueled the industrial revolution! Hessians and the Continental army scurried back and forth across the counties and what has become known as the Crossroads of the American Revolution. Washington’s troops spent two harsh winters in the hills of Morristown. The strategic location afforded him proximity to New York City, defensible terrain, important communication routes and access to critical resources.

Naples Is the Golf Capital of the World

There are more than 80 championship golf courses in the Naples area. That’s one reason Naples is known as the “Golf Capital of the World.” It also claims to have more holes per capita than any other community.

Golf is an important part of Naples and its History. Local folklore claims that shortly after the Naples Beach Hotel Course was built, a small single engine airplane would often land on one of the fairways. The pilot would disembark and play a round (9 holes then), climb in his plane and depart. When the course superintendent discovered these shenanigans he immediately chased the flyer away. The flyer turned out to be Charles Lindbergh, who never landed on the course again.

When you stop for lunch or go out to dinner, odds are you will be seated close to a golfer’s table. With so many wonderful and challenging courses in the area, its a new experience everyday!

Many of our developments are golf course communities, created by such excellent designers as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Arthur Hills, Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Joe Lee, and many, many more.

Naples has hosted major state, national and professional tournaments for several decades and continues to expand its role in competition play. The LG Championship (Seniors Tour) has been played at the Classics at Lely Resort, the Vineyards, and Pelican Bay in past years. These events draw more golf enthusiasts every year to Southwest Florida.

One of the true joys of playing golf in Southwest Florida is you can see nature in the wild. Eagles, osprey, alligators, and other wild life are often spotted on or near the courses. After all, the courses were once their grounds exclusively.
